St. Camillus de Lellis founded an order of priests to serve plague victim. The habit was an all black cassock with a large red cross. It was so that as the administer the last sacraments to plague, they would recall the blood, the Savior shed for them at calvary. Thus preforming a corpal and perhaps a spiritual work of mercy as did the Savior, the divine Healer of our Souls.
He founded the order centuries before the International Red Cross Society was founded.
